| 12925 | The Daily Astorian newspaper Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon Monday, August 4, 1975 Page One TWO MEN MISSING AFTER TUNA BOAT BURNS - Presumed drowned Two men, one of them from Astoria, are missing and presumed dead after their 40-foot tuna fishing boat from Astoria burned and sank about 50 miles off Newport Sunday morning. Missing are John Grotting, 62, Coos Bay, and his grandnephew, Randy Lizon, of Astoria. They were aboard the Signe S, anchored with a fleet of other tuna boats. The U.S. Coast Guard presumes the two men abandoned the burning boat and subsequently drowned, a Coast Guard spokesman at Air Station Astoria said today. A four-engine search plane from San Francisco, a helicopter from Astoria and a 62-foot boat from Newport went to the scene and searched without success for the missing men. The Coast Guards first report from the tug "Seaspan" of Vancouver, B.C., who reported seeing flames at about 4:45 a.m. The Seaspan said it couldnt see any sign of life on the boat. The helicopter reached the scene at about 5:45 a.m. Rescuers were unable to board the boat because of the burning flames. Three 55-gallon fuel drums at the stern eventually exploded, sinking the boat about three hours after the fire was reported. The Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing men pending further developments. | Grotting, Johan Martin (I175001)

| 12928 | The Daily Astorian newspaper Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1957 Page One DEAD MAN PIONEER IN REGION The body of Edward Grotting, 79, was found Monday morning about 700 feet from the point where he had left his small skiff in which he went duck-hunting early Sunday. Sheriffs Deputy Carl Bondietti, who assisted in the search for the aged man, said Grotting had apparently succumbed to a heart attack after walking the distance on Marys Island above the maritime base on the Columbia. Grottings gun was fully loaded and had not been fired, indicating that the hunter collapsed and died shortly after he started on the hunt, Bondietti said. PIONEER HERE Grotting was a pioneer troll fisherman, being one of the first who ventured across the bar in their gillnet boats. Grotting and a handful of other fishermen, made their own spoons and tackle for the infant industry which has since grown to its present size. A native of Lensvik, Norway, he was born there, the son of Christopher and Marit Ysland Grotting, and grew to manhood there and in 1902, came to Brainard, Minn., where he worked in logging camps and on farms for about tow years. Grotting came to Astoria in 1904 when he began gillnet fishing in the old sailboat days. It was about 1907 when he and a few other hardy and daring fishermen ventured out across the Columbia river bat to pioneer the present troll fishing industry. Grotting was married in Astoria on January 7, 1905, to Margaret Wahl and with her established their home in Astoria. In 1914, the family moved to the John Day district, becoming one of the early settlers in that area. Mrs. Grotting died here in1953. A fisherman during most of his lifetime, Grotting has fished several seasons in Alaska. He made two trips with his daughter, recently returning from their five-month trip. [Probably this meant a trip to Norway, not Alaska.] He was a member of the Sons of Norway lodge. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Marna) Forseth, route 2, box 70, Astoria (John Day), with whom Grotting had lived in recent years; five sons, Peter and Edward, Morro Bay, Calif; Isak, John and Arne Grotting, Eureka, Calif., three brothers, Chris Grotting, Astoria; Ole Grotting, Portland, and Martin Grotting, Trondheim, Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Kristine Grotting and Mrs. Elizabeth Ysland, also in Trondheim; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Among more distant relatives is a nephew, Helger Kverndal of Astoria. Details of services which are being planned for Friday afternoon, will be announced by the Hughes-Ransom Mortuary. ~~~~~~~~~~ The Daily Astorian newspaper Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1957 OBITUARIES, Page 2 EDWARD GROTTING Services for Edward Grotting, 79, who died Sunday while duck hunting, will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel of the Hughes-Ransom mortuary. | 12950 | There are some differing accounts of "Merit's" Christian name, depending upon the source or record: Marit, Mariet, even Margaret. One Ancestry.com member, who also has provided a picture of Merit and Peder Karo on the site, documents her name as Marit Jostensen Reitan. A granddaughter was named Mariet Rose. Merit's parents are recorded as Anders Jostensen Vaagan or Vagereitan and Marie Evensdatter Lian by Ancestry.com members. Merit and Peder Karo married in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington on 08 May 1909. They are credited with 9 children by other Ancestry members: Andrew, twins Alf and Gertrude, Maria, Jennie, Edward, Harold, Florence Rose and Margaret. Their oldest son was born in Norway, and stayed at his grandparents Anders and Gjertrud Lilleli/Kaarø. Andrew later emigrated as well and arrived in Blaine, Whatcom County, Washington on 24 Dec 1929 per a U.S., Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1895 - 1960 record, he lists his father as Peder Karo but also lists his Norwegian grandfather as Anders J. Lilleli. The Peder and Merit Karo family resided in Sylvana, Snohomish County, Washington in 1910; Camano, Island County, Washington in 1920; rural Glenn County, California in 1930 and by 1940 they were living in Nucla, Montrose County, Colorado. Merit must have returned to Glenn County, California as that is where she died. Peder remained or returned back to Nucla. Perhaps Merit was visiting with a family member at the time of her death, or perhaps she was being nursed by a family member in Glenn County. Her married daughter Jennie was residing in rural Orland, Glenn County in the 1940's. Inscription Mother Karo.
