- Orville R. Todahl, 87, formerly of Holcombe and Eleva, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Dove Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation in Eau Claire.
He was born at home in Eleva on Oct. 9, 1920, to Hjalmer and Selma (Semingson) Todahl. He grew up in Eleva and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served with the 128th Infantry, 28th Division, known as the "Bloody Bucket." He fought in every battle in the European theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. When he was wounded, he was sent to England and then sent back to battle. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After the war he was sent back to the states in August of 1945.
He married Jean Toy on March 16, 1946. They lived in Eau Claire, Eleva and Holcombe. Orville worked at Uniroyal for a year, then hauled Walter's Beer for Gail Babcock, ran the Eleva American Legion, worked for White's Machine Shop as an electrician for 15 years and then worked at Presto Industries. Then Orville and Jean bought a resort in Holcombe. They operated Big Swede's for 31 years. In 1997, they retired to Eleva. He was a member of Eleva Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, confirmed and married, Strum VFW Post 6550, Eleva American Legion Post 459 and Disabled American Veterans of Chippewa Falls. Orville was a jack-of-all-trades and loved his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Jean of Eleva; three children, Susan (George) Sutor Sr. of Holcombe, Kate Weber of Rice Lake and Edwin Todahl of Menomonie; eight grandchildren, George Sutor Jr., Michael Sutor, Gerritt Van Dorn, Derk Van Dorn, Orrin Todahl, Lindsay Todahl, Kayla Weber and Zachary Weber; one great-grandson, Chase Burgess; a sister, Viola (Bruce) Berg of Eau Claire; a brother, Robert (Connie) Todahl of Eleva; a sister-in-law, Corrine Todahl of Eleva; brothers-in-law, Glenn (Dorothy) Toy of Boise, Idaho, and Jack (Joanne) Toy of Fargo, N.D.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Orville was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Butler; and one brother LaVerne Todahl.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at Eleva Lutheran Church in Eleva, with the Rev. Kermit Solem officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Eau Claire, with military rites conducted by the Eleva American Legion Post 459 and the Strum VFW Post 6550.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2008, at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Eleva and on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to services.
