Melvin O. Erickson, 80
Funeral services for Melvin O. Erickson of rural Jackson were held Friday afternoon, July 23, at Belmont Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rachael Gusaas officiating. Melvin O. Erickson died July 19, 2004, at his home. Burial with military rites by the Jackson American Legion and VFW Posts was in West Belmont Cemetery, Belmont Township, Jackson County.
Casket bearers were Jim Grantz, Randy Miller, Dwayne Anderson, John Lilleberg, Bruce Schoewe and Roger Normandin. Jim Thoreson and Maynard Thoreson were ushers. Music was provided by organist Lois Thoreson and soloists Marilynn Gillman and Jerry Mellum. The Sathe-Osterberg Funeral Home of Jackson handled the funeral arrangements.
Melvin Owen Erickson, son of Peter and Sophie (Erickson) Erickson, was born April 11, 1924, in Belmont Township, Jackson County. He attended country school in Belmont Township. After his education, he farmed with his family. On Sept. 28, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Hood and in Saipan. He was discharged in October 1946 and went back to farming.
On July 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Faye Marilyn Sieburg at Belmont Lutheran Church. They farmed their whole life in Belmont Township. For the past 33 years, Melvin refurbished and sold used pickup trucks.
Melvin was a life member of Belmont Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was also a trustee and on the church council, and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Farm Bureau.
Melvin is survived by one son, Alan and wife Cynthia Erickson of Jackson, one daughter, Nancy and husband David Eischens of rural Comfrey; and grandchildren, Kimberly and husband Jeremy Roland of Canton, S.D., Dustin Erickson of Jackson, Brandon and wife Angela Leen of Brookings, S.D., and Amanda Eischens and Amber Eischens of Comfrey; two great-grandchildren, Chandler Leen and Mackenzie Roland; a special friend, Liz Vacura of Jackson, and a sister-in-law, Johann Erickson of rural Jackson.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Faye; and one brother, John E. Erickson.
